Kingsbridge Visits Van Cortlandt Park Print E-mail

On Sat, March 2, 2013, Kingsbridge International High School conducted its first outing of 2013: a hike around Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx followed by ice skating.

Since Kingsbridge no longer has the luxury of a bus, the group choose a destination within walking distance of the school, showing the youths an outdoor destination they can revisit on their own. NYC ICO Chair Katie Frusti and NYC ICO volunteer Ray Greenwell led the 13 youths and two teachers up Goulden Ave. and entered the park near the Mosholu Parkway. They wandered around on various paths until they reached the Allen Shandler Recreation Area. They then crossed East 233 Street and followed a circuitous rough that eventually led us past Van Cortlandt Lake and the the ice rink on Broadway near West 242 Street.

After first eating their Red Rabbit lunches (thanks again, Red Rabbit!!) at the tables outside the rink, they spent the next hour and a half skating. A light snow helped brighten up the dreary day. Some of the youths had clearly skated quite a few times before. A couple others were out for their second time and clung tightly to Katie or Ray as they wobbled tentatively. By the time most of the group was tired of skating, however, even the beginners were feeling more confident. The group walked back to the school via Sedgewick Ave., having spent the day emphasizing the "inner city" in Inner City Outings.

CampInteractive on the Overlook Spur Trail! Print E-mail

Here's a quick trip report from CampInteractive's trip on the Overlook Spur Trail near Woodstock, NY on Sun, Jan 13, 2013!

It was a great day!! Me and ICO Volunteer Andrew Lamb, along with two CampInteractive volunteers - Alison Morris and Ian Mednick, took 15 CampInteractive students up to Woodstock for a foggy, slushy hike 2 miles up Overlook Spur Trail. Our destination was an abandoned hotel near the summit of Overlook Mt. In 1871, the Overlook Mountain House opened its doors to guests, joining numerous others in the Catskills. The hotel had the distinction of being the highest, at 2,920'. The Mountain House could house 300 guests and, despite burning down twice, prospered until around the time of the stock market crash. in the following years, it was rebuilt (but never opened to guests) and eventually looted and abandoned, leaving the ruins that can still be seen along the trail.

Although we all managed to soak through our hiking boots (did I mention slushy?!), the hotel definitely didn't disappoint. The fog (did I mention foggy?!) created a totally spooky atmosphere. Check out the pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151161859736455.429210.13267291454&type=1

We were lucky to have also been able to meet ICO Volunteer Kara Chesal in Woodstock with her crew of 8 more people from CampInteractive's Young Executive Board. This made our intreped hiking crew 28 people deep! Super fun to be on the trail with such an inspiring group of adults and students.

Hope to catch you next time!
